Congratulations to the BIGbin Company, a client and tenant of South East BIC since 2011, who have been nominated for the Vodafone Green business start up 2012. The Startup Awards are all about recognising young, exciting, entrepreneurial Irish companies. The Awards seek to reward innovation and endeavour and to demonstrate that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Ireland in 2012. The BIGbin Company have created its own niche within the waste industry in Ireland. The BIGbin install waste compactors on petrol forecourts throughout Ireland. These bins are for domestic waste and customers can fit up to two bags for every €5 ticket. In Ireland only 60% of households are availing of kerbside collection services (ERSI 2011) where waste goes uncollected, the EPA assumes that a large part of this is disposed of by illegal means. The BIGbin Company provides the public with an alternative method of affordable waste disposal while also providing a partial solution to illegal dumping. Subsequently the BIGbin Company recycle 45-55% of the collected waste through Mechanical Biological Treatment. The BIGbin Company own and operate all the BIGbins on the garage forecourts and the implementation, maintenance and collection of waste is expertly managed by the company. BIGbin was formed in 2010. They have bins operating in Counties Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath and Limerick. The business has already proved that it is sustainable, sales are growing month on month, but most importantly they have created jobs and will create further employment in the future, exactly what is needed in Waterford at present. |
